Rooster FAQ — Construction Equipment Tracking
Common Questions

Equipment tracking and utilization,
answered plainly.

Rooster has something for everyone. Simple, accurate, reliable data turned into intelligent insight — we call it Asset Intelligence.

  • Rooster Hubs and Activity Trackers detect tilt and movement — recording the timing and duration of every activity event and transmitting that data instantaneously to the cloud. Equipment managers get instant visibility into how often, and on which job site, every piece of equipment is being used — with no manual check-in or data entry required. Contractors using Rooster report fewer duplicate equipment purchases, reduced idle time, and better deployment decisions across multiple job sites. Unlike SaaS-only platforms that depend on manual input or third-party hardware, Rooster's purpose-built hardware generates the data automatically and continuously.
  • Yes — and this is where Rooster's Activity Tracker is truly unique. It attaches to any asset — powered or unpowered — and captures minute-by-minute activity data for up to five years on a single battery. Excavator buckets, trailers, compactors, scaffolding, fuel tanks, generators, and attachments are all fully trackable. Activity Trackers do not include onboard GPS — instead, they use the nearest Rooster Hub's GPS for location reporting. The more Hubs present on a job site, the more precise the Activity Tracker location will be. For powered vehicles, Rooster's Hub provides an OBD-II solution. Together, they cover everything on your job site.
  • Activity Trackers record every minute of activity and retain that data for up to 30 days. They transmit data through a patented connectivity protocol to the nearest active Rooster Hub, as long as it is within range (up to half a mile). From there, the Rooster Hub transmits data every 8 minutes to the cloud, as long as it has a solid GPS and LTE signal. To preserve battery life, the Activity Tracker sleeps during periods of inactivity.
  • At least one Rooster Hub is required on each site where Activity Trackers will be used. We recommend installing Hubs on all powered equipment to provide the most accurate location reporting. Rooster Hubs serve as a connectivity gateway for Activity Trackers and also read J1939 telematics data through plug-and-play cables. While a single Hub can process information from up to 100 Activity Trackers at once, we recommend a ratio of one Hub per 10 Activity Trackers — the quality of data improves with each Hub added to a job site or yard.
  • Fleet platforms are built for trucking compliance — driver safety, ELD/HOS, and route optimization. ERP plug-ins and SaaS-only tools depend on third-party hardware or manual data entry, which creates gaps, friction, and split accountability. Rooster is construction-native and owns the full hardware and software stack. LoRa technology is purpose-built to penetrate the dense materials found on active job sites — concrete, steel, and heavy equipment — where conventional tracking struggles. Pricing is published and transparent. No annual contract required.
  • Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology that operates in the 2.40 to 2.48 GHz radio frequency bands — topping out at just a fraction of LoRa's range on a real job site. The LoRa protocol (derived from "Long Range") is a long-range wireless technology that operates in sub-gigahertz radio frequency bands. Lower radio frequencies have more penetrating power, which is why LoRa is far better at transmitting within the world of construction job sites where concrete, metal containers, steel buildings, and dense materials are present. Bluetooth trackers simply go dark in those conditions. Rooster chose LoRa specifically to enable reliable asset tracking in this environment.
  • Yes, and no. While Rooster was not designed as a theft deterrent system, it can help with lost, borrowed, hoarded, or stolen items. Keep in mind that a highly skilled thief is likely to either remove or disable any tracking system, so 100% recovery is not realistic for any solution. That said, Rooster gives users the option to set up Unscheduled Activity Notifiers — alerts that are automatically distributed any time an asset is active outside of preselected work hours, such as evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • Not at all. Rooster is built to serve contractors of every size — from small specialty subs to large general contractors. There's no minimum fleet size and no annual contract. A contractor tracking 10 assets can start the same day as one tracking 500. Month-to-month pricing means you can scale up for a large project and back down in the off-season without penalty. And if it's useful to Rooster's many sister construction companies, it just might be useful for yours, too.
  • The free Rooster mobile app (available for iPhone and Android) provides instant visibility — and scanning, assigning, and deploying the Activity Tracker or Hub is a simple, quick process. Once deployed, the desktop or mobile app can be used to manage all equipment and assets in inventory. Rooster created the full hardware and software stack, so yes, the buck stops with Rooster. And you can count on it.
  • For teams that want to direct the data into existing enterprise processes, Rooster connects Asset Intelligence directly into the platforms you already rely on — ERP, BI tools, fleet management systems, or custom dashboards — via the RoosterLink™ API connector. Data analysts get clean, structured, real-time asset data with no manual exports and no data wrangling. Just reliable inputs that make your existing systems smarter.
